Happy 'Steak & You've Got No Chance Sunshine" Day
Got up quite early - had heard that the Tivoli had gone up in smoke. The alarm was raised at 3am and it was still burning more than 6 hours later when we got there. We talked to a fireman who said that the roof had completely gone. They had saved the Boathouse and were trying to keep the fire contained. The roads around the area were all closed (Chesterton/Victoria/Elizabeth Way/Maid's Causeway/Victoria etc) which, combined with roadworks on the Histon Rd/Victoria Rd/Huntingdon Rd junction, caused complete gridlock.
It's a terrible shame to see a lovely old art deco building & decent pub being destroyed by a devastating fire. Speculation is that it started in the kitchen (somebody left the gas on?). There were reports that the main damage is the roof & top floor and that the ground & lower floors had just suffered smoke damage. Not sure how somebody came up with this as, due to the structural damage nobody has been inside.
Also heard that Vanuatu had taken a direct hit from a monster cyclone, Pam. Bit worried as Margarettha had just moved there to take up a new job. Lou sent a text & WhatsAp message but heard nothing back. Hope she's OK
In the afternoon we met the Seru's & the Harry's in the Grain Store (aka the Avery). Lots of chats & laughter (eg Chris launching Angry Birds when trying to take a picture of Harry at the bar).
Turns out I was wrong about 'No Chance Sunshine' ...
